DURATION: Three days
COURSE OVERVIEW: Being a professional supervisor for the County of Riverside requires a strong understanding of the four major management functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. These functions are driven by management activities (tasks) such as communicating, motivating, selecting and developing people, assessing performance, providing feedback, correcting problems and numerous others. These tasks are accomplished through the effective execution of competencies (skills) that are grouped in eight major clusters.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
- Demonstrate understanding of the major activities that drive planning, organizing, leading and controlling at the supervisory level.
- Communicate effectively to employees, peers and managers in a wide range of interpersonal situations as well as in business writing and making presentations.
- Get work done through others by directing and delegating to team members, following up to ensure productive results and helping team members pursue professional development goals.
- Inspire team memebers by providing a compelling vision and purpose, positive reinforcement for achievement and negotiating tough situations with a focus on maintaining relationships.
- Make complex decisions through innovation, logic and awareness of greater implications.
- Deal with trouble effectively by acting with courage to confront underperforming and difficult employees confidently and constructively.
- Demonstrate openness and receptiveness by remaining calm under pressure, listening actively to others, avoiding defensiveness and sharing personal thoughts appropriately.
- Demonstrate personal flexibility by dealing with paradoxes capably and adapting to others' personalities and situational reactions effectively.
- Act with honor and character by demonstrating adherence to core values, trustworthiness to keep confidences, tactful truth-telling and willingness to admit mistakes.
