CLASS OVERVIEW: For many supervisors, discipline is synonymous with punishment, a method of exerting control and power over employees. In a more productive sense, however, discipline refers to those actions you can take to help employees correct and improve their performance. Many supervisors, unsure of proper action and wary of the perceived legal and administration implications, do nothing. This unwillingness to act can lead to the erosion of supervisory authority, high absenteeism, low morale, reduced work output and ultimately to the deterioration of the team performance.
This program explores step-by-step methods for dealing with performance problems and properly enacting disciplinary measures. This class also includes an overview of the County's negotiated grievance procedure including the time tables and the rights and responsibilities under the procedure.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify the seven elements of Just Cause.
- Define the Skelly process.
- Enact proper progressive or immediate discipline based on the circumstances of each case.
- Conduct and properly document all internal investigations.
- Write disciplinary documents to ensure the employee understands what the action is and what behavior is alleged to have been improper.
