Survival of the Savvy

DURATION:  Two days, 14 CE Hours

COURSE OVERVIEW:
Survival of the Savvy is a mission-critical competency for leaders at every level.  Each day in business, a corporate version of "survival of the fittest" is played out.  Power plays, turf battles, deception, and sabotage block individuals' career progress and threaten organizational resources and results.

Based on the book Survival of the Savvy, by Rick Brandon and Marty Seldman, this class provides ethical but street-smart strategies for navigating organizational politics to gain "impact with integrity".

It will help you adjust your attitudes about power and politics, confront your naiveté about organizational dynamics that are often swept under the carpet, and recognize tip-offs that you may be vulnerable.  With step by step recommendations you learn in this course, you will never have to say, "I didn't see it coming."

Objectives:

  • Utilize practical, non-manipulative strategies for entering the political arena while maintaining integrity, such as networking, promoting yourself, handling hidden agendas, selling ideas to stakeholders, managing the corporate “buzz,” avoiding sabotage and building your power base.

  • Be aware of the two primary Political Styles in organizations, what influences them, and how to avoid the dangers of adopting the extreme of either style.

  • Defuse emotional upset you may have about politics as a fact of organizational life so that you will waste less time and energy. Instead, you’ll become “street smart” and strategic.

  • Recognize any political tip-offs about which you may be naive.

  • Present your ideas or challenge others’ ideas with appropriately firm vocabulary and adjust your language according to the power dynamics of the situation.

  • Detect, prevent, and manage deception since even top leaders are vulnerable to distorted information, misrepresentation, and manipulation that can scorch company resources and reputations.

  • Recognize and handle sabotage in group situations by deftly managing resistance and challenges to your credibility or position.
